February 2013 - More French coming to Australia than going to Britain
Well, I didn't think it was possible, but apparently this is official, there are nore French people trying to emigrate to Australia than UK to find jobs. It seems a little bit surrealist as Australia so far out and a smaller country, but nevertheless I still see newbies coming to town trying to look for a job. But it looks like the job market is not as good. Engineers and financial people struggle longer and are in direct competition with more locals (read less opportunities). Second recession has done waves (not as hard as in Europe) and there is still a double speed economy in Australia. We are still in a better position that a lot of countries, but I feel the Aussie dream is kind of declining and it is harder to get a job from overseas. The main thing is that in Sydney, job offers are predominantly given by word of mouth and cooptation. Of course, you have seek.com.au and the likes, but when I see the importance of LinkedIn and networking, I am bit dismayed when I see Sydneysiders coming back to town after a few years and struggling sometimes as much as the foreigners, just because they've lost their professional network (ie they changes jobs, moved cities...). And themselves, they admit it takes 6 months to get your network started, which means you need to plan your financials ahead if you have any intention to come to Australia and expect to find a job in fairly quickly manner... But you can be lucky and will always hear the happy stories, but who is going to brag about their failures and lack of chance really? Sometimes, people only see what suit them. I am not saying you cannot find a sponsored job quickly and easily in Sydney, but it is not as it used to be.
