Saturday 14 July 2012 - Bastille Day and French people in Sydney

15 Juillet 2012 , Rédigé par Karine

Man, I didn't realise that we were that many French people in Sydney !! I went to Argyle (The Rocks) for the 14 Juillet celebration (Bastille Day, they call it here) and the DJ told me that they pre-sold 1,300 tickets. I only came after midnight, but I was told that it was impressively packed. I didn't realise the French community have grown so much. According to Australiance, they are 1,800 people and half of them were French.

Coincidently "Le petit journal" also made an article based on the SBS website and Australian Bureau of Statistics (census 2011), saying that between 2000 and 2010, the number of French people had a 258% increase (743 to 2660), the average age was 30-34 years old. I believe the census talk mostly of people living in Australia for a long time as it says that 68% have the Australian citizenship.
